1. The heart muscle itself requires a continuous supply of oxygenated blood to function and survive.
2. The arteries that branch off from the aorta (the main artery leaving the heart) specifically to deliver this oxygenated blood to the tissues of the heart (myocardium) are called the coronary arteries.
3. Blockage of these arteries leads to heart attacks (myocardial infarction).
4. Carotid arteries supply the head and brain. Hepatic arteries supply the liver. Pulmonary arteries carry deoxygenated blood from the heart to the lungs.
