With reference to river Teesta, consider the following statements: 1. The source of river Teesta is the same as that of Brahmaputra but it flows through Sikkim. 2. River Rangeet originates in Sikkim and it is a tributary of river Teesta. 3. River Teesta flows into Bay of Bengal on the border of India and Bangladesh. Which of the statements given above is/are correct?

A

1 and 3 only

B

2 only

C

2 and 3 only

D

1, 2 and 3

Correct Answer: Option B

Explanation

1. Statement 1 is incorrect. The source of the river Teesta is the Tso Lhamo lake/Pahunri glacier in the Himalayas of Sikkim. The source of the Brahmaputra river is the Angsi Glacier in the Tibetan plateau. Their sources are different. 2. Statement 2 is correct. The River Rangeet does originate in Sikkim (from the Rathong glacier) and is a major tributary of the river Teesta. 3. Statement 3 is incorrect. The river Teesta flows through Sikkim and West Bengal in India before entering Bangladesh, where it joins the Brahmaputra River (Jamuna). It does not flow directly into the Bay of Bengal, nor does it do so on the border of India and Bangladesh. 4. Therefore, only statement 2 is correct.
