UPSC Mains (Main Examination)

The Main Examination is the written stage that tests depth of understanding and the ability to present coherent, structured answers under time pressure.

Structure

Nine papers: Paper-A (Indian language) and Paper-B (English) are qualifying. Essay, GS-I, GS-II, GS-III, GS-IV and two Optional papers (Paper VI & VII) count for merit — 1750 marks in total.

Answer Writing

Each merit paper is 250 marks and 3 hours. Success depends on structured introductions, well-argued bodies, relevant examples and crisp conclusions — practised daily.

Optional Subject

Candidates choose one optional subject with two papers of 250 marks each. The choice should balance interest, scoring trend and overlap with GS.
